What is a banked reset?
A Codex banked reset is a one-time allowance refresh saved on an eligible account for later use. It is separate from a recurring weekly reset and from purchased API credits. Check your account’s availability and expiry before planning work around it.
OpenAI’s banked reset guide, reviewed October 27, 2026, explains the current rules. Offers can differ by plan, workspace and region; an old announcement does not establish current eligibility.
Will it change my weekly reset date?
A banked reset can change the next refresh time of an affected allowance; an allowance already at 100% is not restarted. Check the new time in Settings → Usage after using it. Do not keep a reminder based on the old weekly date; update your personal timer instead.
If no eligible window needs refreshing, the reset stays available. A successful refresh consumes it. The account display can take a little time to catch up.
Where do I use it?
On desktop, open Settings → Usage & billing; on the web, open Usage settings. Review the available reset, affected limits and expiry. In a supported CLI version, use /usage → Redeem reset; otherwise use desktop or web. In an active CLI session, /status can help you check the allowance first. See OpenAI’s Codex usage guidance for your plan’s options.
Why does it say my usage does not need a reset?
Manual redemption requires a covered allowance below 80% remaining. Assistant redemption requires the desktop permission and a main five-hour or weekly allowance at 10% or less remaining. These are different conditions; check the current official rules before enabling assistant use.
Does “Reset received” mean my usage refreshed?
No. Received means saved for later; used means redeemed. Check Available for expiry. Paid and global resets are absent from this banked history, so history alone cannot confirm or deny a global reset.
Before you redeem: check four things
- The signed-in account and workspace. Make sure you are looking at the account that earned the credit. A public post about paid plans does not establish your own eligibility.
- The credit’s current availability. Look for a remaining credit and the action to use it. Seeing a past announcement in our archive is not evidence that the credit is still available.
- The expiry shown for that credit. Keep the exact date from your account. If you want a reminder, choose “Reset credit expiry” in the personal timer and add it to your calendar.
- The effect stated in the redemption screen. Read which limit is affected before confirming. Do not assume that a credit changes every usage bucket, another workspace, or API billing.
Why is my banked reset not working?
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| No credit or redemption action | Compare the original offer’s dates, plan and eligibility with your account. Do not keep clicking a tracker expecting it to grant a credit. |
| The credit has expired | Use your account’s current allowance information. NextReset cannot restore an expired credit. |
| The action fails or the screen does not update | Refresh Settings → Usage and check the intended account/workspace. If the result remains unclear, save the exact message, time and timezone, client/model, offer and current Usage screenshot for official Support. |
| A limit remains after redemption | Check which bucket is limiting you and what the credit said it would reset. Use the usage-limit checklist. |
Does a banked credit affect the reset prediction?
Banked-only entries appear in our archive and can trigger a credit alert if you opt in. They do not count as automatic reset events in the model or the community game. A combined reset-and-credit announcement counts once as a qualifying automatic event.
For a missing or failed grant, use the help route in your official account. OpenAI does not investigate individual eligibility for free promotional resets or replace missed, expired or accidentally used free resets. Paid purchases have a separate support route. Share those details with support; never post a reset credential or private account screenshot in a public prediction board.
