THE CODEX OBSERVATORY
THE RESET FIELD GUIDE · REVIEWED OCT 27, 2026

Codex usage limit reached.
What now?

Start with the message and your usage screen. A personal reset time, a service problem and a surprise public reset need different next steps.

1. Read the limit that actually stopped you

Open the usage view in the account and workspace you are using. Note the affected allowance and its stated reset time. If several windows appear, compare all of them; one may be available while another is exhausted. For an API-key session, check its API billing and rate-limit details separately from a ChatGPT plan.

Open Settings → Usage or your usage dashboard; in an active Codex CLI session, enter /status. Compare the allowance, credit balance and reset times displayed there. A short-term window can stop you even when weekly usage remains.

OpenAI’s Codex plan and usage guidance, reviewed October 6, 2026, says consumption varies with model, task, context and tools. A task count is therefore not a guaranteed allowance.

2. Match the symptom to a next step

Your account shows a future reset timeSave that exact time in the personal reset timer. This is your account’s window, separate from our public forecast.
A banked reset is availableA full reset can move your weekly reset date. Check its expiry and the updated Usage time after redemption. Follow the banked reset checklist.
The reset time passed but access still failsRefresh Usage, confirm the account/workspace and check other allowances. If access still fails after the displayed reset, send the timestamp, screenshot and client details through official Support.
Requests fail without a clear allowance messageCheck official service status. An incident is context; it is not a promise of compensation or a reset.
A reset was announced on XRead the original scope and whether it is a promise, completed rollout, or credit. Confirm your own account; a public post cannot show its individual balance.

Tibo announced a reset. Why has mine not changed?

Check whether the original post promises a future rollout, reports completion, or grants a banked credit. Compare its eligible plans and covered limits with your account. The current public reset watch links to the source; it cannot confirm delivery to you. Refresh your account’s Usage view and compare each allowance. Do not redeem or buy another reset merely to test the first.

3. Decide whether waiting fits your work

If the account gives a reset time, plan around that time. Available options can include waiting, applying an available reset, adding credits or changing plans; follow the options shown for your account and review their terms and cost before choosing. OpenAI Support does not manually reset usage limits. Reduce unnecessary context, choose settings appropriate to the task, and save completed work before starting another long run. None of these actions guarantees a fixed allowance saving.

4. Use public predictions for context

The Tibo reset tracker estimates an additional automatic reset from public history and reset-specific signals. It cannot move your personal timer or guarantee access. A high percentage is still an experimental estimate, and community picks are a separate game.

If the issue remains unclear

Keep the exact error, affected allowance, displayed reset time, workspace and whether you redeemed a credit. Use your official account’s help route for account-specific problems. NextReset does not request your API key, password or account usage.
